MANAGEMENT OF THE DIABETIC LOWER EXTREMITY
Putting the Right Foot Forward
June 24-26, 1999 Vancouver, Canada
This symposium is aimed at all members of the interdisciplinary team,
especially those involved in the treatment of diabetic complications in the
lower extremity.
Diabetes is a growing health problem that affects approximately 1.5
million Canadians and 15 million Americans. People with diabetes are at
risk of heart and kidney disease, stroke, foot ulceration, and amputation.
These ulceration and amputation cases require that orthopaedic
rehabilitation professionals become active members of the
interdisciplinary treatment team. While a team approach can minimize
complications, all team members must be familiar with the preventive,
acute, and long-term care issues when dealing with diabetes.
Biomechanical considerations are of special importance for diabetic care
since poor biomechanics typically leads to lower extremity problems.
The primary focus of the symposium is on the biomechanical
considerations for optimal diabetic care including service delivery,
prevention of ulceration, and determining orthotic and prosthetic
treatment goals. Information will be provided by podium lectures, panel
discussions, and workshops.
