Dear Colleagues,
A 14 y.o. female who was diagnosed with scoliosis a few years ago recently
came to me. She has been wearing a Boston type brace full time for
approximately 2 years. She is getting close to skeletal maturity, Risser 4.
When the scoliosis was discovered, she presented with a 25 degree curve so
nothing was done at that point in time. Bracing began when she progressed
to 30 degrees. Either due to lack of follow up or an ill fitting brace, she
progressed to 42 degrees, out of brace. She has been holding at 42 degrees.
My question is, when can the weaning process from the brace begin? Is there
a standard protokol? Or does it vary from person to person? Does the
wearing schedule become a part time schedule or is brace wearing eliminated
for the sleeping cycle first, then slowly eliminated from daily wear?
I would appreciate any guidelines you may have to offer. Thanks in advance
for your input.
