Thank you all for your thoughtful and informative comments on bracing our
young patient with Blounts Disease. Almost everyone agrees that Terry Supan
CPO pretty much got it right and published his techniques in: Clinical
Orthotics and Prosthetics 1985; 9:3-6. Terry also wrote to say that he now
uses a full stirrup and valgus strap on the KAFO, a D-ring is welded to the
lateral part of the stirrup and the corrective strap pulls the ankle away from
the medial ankle joint. Terry also emphasizes the need to excessively
externally rotate the shoe.

I would like to list all the responses as requested, can someone tell me how
to do this efficiently?

Having examined the patient we find that the child actually has severe bowing
of the femur. When we called for Drs. diagnosis we were told Genu Varum ( the
discussion of diagnosing Blounts Disease hit home ). My apoligies to all for
not having all the information at our first mailing. The fact is that we still
have an Rx for: Bilateral Blounts Single Upright KAFO's w\ Knee Pads & Free
Motion ankle hinges. If any one has suggestions or tips in light of this new
information we would love to here from you.
Thanks,
William Earles CO
