How's that?..... two posts to the list in as many days! It never stops!
I had a guy in for assessment today: 28. with a nine year old Brachial
Plexus injury which has left him with some Biceps function, shoulder
elevation and depression; no ab~ or adduction; no pronation/supination of
forearm etc.
His surgeon has sent him to me with a view to assessment prior to possible
amputation. Apart from the obvious fillip to my ego having a Surgeon
consult me, I was struck by the possibility that this guy could go from
having a totally useless upper limb to a prosthetic limb that should be of
some functional value, given that his elbow should be salvageable, with
function from the biceps and that he would have a functional terminal
device.
He hadn't considered a prosthesis at all but was considering amputation to
ease the pain/paraesthesia that he suffers in the afflicted limb.
I would appreciate ANY advice that you could give with regard to
componentry/function/post-op. pain levels in these cases etc.
Kind regards, Richard Ziegeler (Prosthetist, Occ.Therapist)
