Ted Trower should get a medal for posting the HCFA press release on the
listserv. HCFA is deadly serious about cracking down of waste, fraud and
abuse. This is not a passing fancy -- it's the real thing. Everyone in
Washington (and maybe in state capitols, too) thinks that cutting out fraud
and abuse will solve the health care financing dilemma. Whether they are
right or wrong, they are going to try hard to do it. It is getting to be like
a witch hunt. They have set up anonymous toll-free numbers and successful
squealers get to keep a big share of the recovered money. It's pretty
scary.
Everyone in the O&P field should make sure their act is squeaky clean.
Announce to your staff that it is the policy of the company to keep everything
within the law. Give employees a safe and effortless way to let you know
(before they call DHHS) if they see any questionable practice. Establish a
written F&A compliance policy. AOPA and ABC are working on an outline of a
policy now. We will let the field know when it is available.
If you have questions about this matter, call AOPA.
