Attn. Prosthetists, Physiotherapists, Physicians etc.
I am a first year student of the Clinical Methods in Prosthetics and
Orthotics program of George Brown College. I am currently researching
the adverse effects that can occur to the body as a direct result of
not wearing a prosthetic device. I am doing a case study of a thirty
year old trans-femoral amputee that lost her leg to osteosarcoma and
has been ambulating for the past 17 years on axillary crutches. She
suffers from Scoliosis and Kyphosis of the spine as well as Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome and Raynaud¹s Syndrome.
I am also concerned that long term use of crutches will result in
problems with her shoulders such as tendonitis and osteoarthritis. I
feel that had she been successful in wearing a prosthetic device these
conditions may not have occurred. If anyone knows of any related
published material or has been in contact with a patient who has
suffered similar or other physical complications, I would appreciate
any feedback, experiences that you may have related to the subject.
Please send responses to - <Email Address Redacted> .
Thank you,
