Dear List,

We recently saw a 7 year old congenital amputee with quadrilateral
involvement. His legs are nearly equal length and closely resemble a knee
disarticulation level (minus the condyles.) One arm is medium length above
elbow and the other only slightly longer.

He currently walks on the ends of his legs with amazing control but
obviously damages the skin and soft tissue padding. He does not want full
length prostheses but rather some type of shoes that will protect the
distal ends of his legs. To further complicate matters, he needs to be
able to easily donn and doff these shoes independently since he often
uses his legs while seated to assist with, would be, hand functions.

We have been considering a crepe type bottom sole for these shoes attached
to either a laced leather upper using the pull-type laces that don't
require tying, or attached to a roll on suspension sleeve without a socket.

Any input, past experiences, or all out guesses would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dan Selleck
