Hello,
I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who replied and who sent me the C-legs and pylons that I had asked for a couple weeks ago. The number of replies and responses really gives me some great feeling about many people in this field who are wanting to really work to help those in need.
Besides receiving the C-leg that I needed for a patient from the Dominican Republic, I got 3 additional C-legs that are in good condition with many more years of life in them. Also I received several other good knee units (3R80, Total Knee 2000, Mauch, etc.) that are also in great condition.
I will be taking these with me to the Dominican Republic next month (depending on travel restrictions and other suggestions that might be an issue in the coming months with the virus and controlling the spread of it). WHEN these eventually do make it to the Dominican Republic they will all be used on some very wonderful people there who are in need of prosthetic limbs.
I took 5 C-legs with me about 6 years ago which were donated by Limbs for Life, they had been sitting there collecting dust, nobody wants to take these or use these in developing nations, which makes total sense. But the Dominican Republic is a bit different. While it is still considered 3rd world status, the lifestyle there is almost identical to living in somewhere like Miami, or Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with very nice malls, food courts, IMAX theaters, etc. They have access to running water, electricity, etc. for the most part. There are still villages out in the campo that are not up to this standard yet, people living in dirt floor shanties, getting water from a well or a public water tube which is shared by the village. But for the most part, the island is very developed and the amputees who did get these C-legs 6 years ago really enjoyed them. It also gave me a chance to teach the prosthetists at the clinic how to program these, fit them, alignment, etc.
This clinic has also now been certified with Touch Bionics and have delivered a couple hands for Below Elbow amputees there. It is amazing how this clinic has advanced and really doing great work.
These extra C-legs that I received from generous donors here will be given to the first group of patients and they are going to be SO happy to have another C-leg to walk on again for a few more years. They really did see a huge improvement on their ability to walk and were very grateful for the time they had with the C-leg.
I just wanted to express my thanks to everyone who replied and who sent these items. I wanted also to let everyone else in this group know that people did reply and did send items that I had asked for.
As I said, it gives me a lot of appreciation and a great feeling knowing that people in this group have the ability and desire to help others in need, to help the amputees who are needing these components and help. We all have stuff sitting around our offices collecting dust..... maybe we can all find ways to use some of this good stuff and get it to the right places where it can be used for people in developing nations in a manner that is not competing or hurting any local clinic or facility that is trying to serve their people. We need to be sensitive to that issue, not to hurt another facility while we are only trying to help the amputees or people with needs that we can help.
Thanks again to everyone.
