Hello colleagues!

My co-workers and I were wondering what the best avenue would be to report ill fitting prosthetics. We had a patient come into our office yesterday with a prosthesis that he has had for approximately 2 years. It was provided to him by another prosthetic company. He has never been able to use it because the fiberglass edge of the socket is so sharp, it cuts into his groin. Several of my prosthetists are enraged over this as he considers it to be criminal to provide someone with something so useless. It set the patient up for failure from the get go. Of course the other prosthetic company received a pretty penny for their MPK set up.

The patient is so tired of the process that has taken years away from his life, he doesn't want to deal with complaining to the payer, he just wants to move on with his life and that is completely understandable. We are going to provide him with a socket replacement so that he can do just that.

The question is, how do we (as a community in general) let the payers know? Do you, the provider, file a complaint against the other company and/or prosthetist? How do we as a community go about putting an end to this type of behavior? One of my co-workers has suggested that there should be some sort of centralized rating system so that patient's could file a complaint and once there are X number of complaints, the prosthetist and/or company must be suspended in some manner. Or perhaps made to go back to school for further training? I know this may sound ridiculous, however, aside from this one instance, this is something we see incredibly often and it is so obvious that the prosthetist(s) have no idea how to fabricate proper sockets.
