We are going to pursue a resistance training leg for one of my Below knee amputees, as he has become passionate about fitness and is doing some advanced weight training. In regards to lower body exercises, he would potentially be putting 400-500lbs(including his body weight) through the prosthesis at times. My plan of sorts is to put him in an extremely over-categorized foot that can withstand the potential weight as well as use heavy duty componentry and a reinforced socket. Specifically, My initial thoughts are a Freedom Highlander MAX, Heavy duty 34mm componentry through American Prosthetics, and a heavy duty, ultra-reinforced carbon fiber socket. All of this componentry is rated up to 500lbs. My patient is 180lbs and will be lifting anywhere between 200-300lbs. Obviously, this would be a prosthesis that my patient would have in addition to his daily leg and take with him to the gym in a duffle and don before he does lower body exercises. Ultimately, the leg would feel like a brick for normal walking, but provide him with the stability and safety he needs when he has 300lbs on his back. What is your experience with this kind of scenario. Have you heard of anyone doing something along these lines. Let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas. Hoping to hear some good feedback on dos and don'ts if anyone has done anything like this. Kind regards.
