Hi Everyone,
I want to thank everyone for participating in the doctoral needs assessment survey that was posted to survey monkey for my school project. Thank you Gerry Stark for guiding me through this survey process. The survey attracted quite a few participants and yielded valuable data and comments that I found very helpful. More work is needed to code the qualitative comments into more categories and sub-categories however I can give a brief overview of the initial findings of the questions. Once the raw data is analyzed, the plans are for a write-up and the results will be presented at a future meeting.
The age demographic was bimodal with 6-10 years and 26 years or more being the two big groups of participants. The higher percentage of respondents felt a doctoral degree was a good idea and there was an interest in an online design. Question five and six produced an over abundance of narrative comments that I’m still wading through however the emerging categories are starting to be defined. Various themes included not needing an entry-level doctoral degree, expense and lack of job openings or reaping any monetary rewards. Other themes supported a doctoral design, advancement of the profession, and evidence based practice. There were many comments pertaining to the concerns of the current state of O and P education and the need to improve the programs before looking at a doctoral degree. Many comments mentioned the lack of prepared graduates for clinical practice thus leading back to the design of the schools.
In the end, the survey produced quite a bit of great information and I think further studies are needed in the area of current and future education in this profession.
Sincerely,
Thomas Karolewski, CP/L, FAAOP
